I wonder if anyone knows what country or area of Euope Kiki's Delivery
Service is set in?

A police car reads "Polis," there's "gutokipanja" on a store, and a woman is
named "Osono."

Maybe I'd recognize it if I'd been to Europe.

I don't think it's set anywhere in particular. The geese are Canadian geese, if
I recall correctly. Rigid airships and television at the same time? The
setting of Kiki is more of a pastiche than any real place or time.

According to Ghibli fan-site nausicaa.net, the city is largely based on
Stockholm and Visby in Sweden. I've never been to Visby, but some parts of
the city do indeed remind me of Stockholm.

Incidentally, "polis" is Swedish for "police", but "Gutokipänja" is
meaningless, though pronouncable (just), in Swedish and is probably a
made-up word.
